As a full-time student, you will receive full financial support throughout the course of your graduate studies. The current student stipend is generous ($23,000), and is supplemented with full support for tuition and fees and health insurance. Student teaching is optional. Continuous registration during all terms is required, and outside jobs are not permitted.
The Department of Microbiology has 34 primary faculty and more than $20 million in active grant support. Departmental dedication to excellence in research, teaching, and training is evidenced not only by our funding support, but also by our ability to attract outstanding postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. We train approximately thirty postdoctoral and seventy-five graduate students at any given time and take pride in launching our trainees into successful and productive careers.
Students are normally admitted into to the Microbiology Graduate Program through the Cellular and Molecular Biology (CMB) Program, a unified laboratory research, lecture, and seminar program staffed by faculty from the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Neurobiology. Admission is based on undergraduate performance (both the curriculum and grade point average), letters of recommendation, GRE scores, a personal statement of research interests, performance in other graduate programs or research activities and, when possible, a personal interview. Applications are strongly encouraged from individuals with previous laboratory experience, a master's degree, or a professional degree such as the MD, DMD, DVM or OD.
For full acceptance into the program, a bachelor's degree including undergraduate coursework in calculus, general and organic chemistry, and at least one introductory course in zoology or biology should be completed by the time of entrance. Courses in genetics, cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, and physical chemistry are strongly advised.
The deadline for foreign applicants is January 15.
Apply via the Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Graduate Program. The CMB Program coordinates the first year coursework for the participating departments. During the application process, you will have the opportunity to indicate a departmental preference. This is not required and is non-binding; you will ultimately join a department based on your mentor's departmental affiliation.
