Biography

R. Pat Bucy (b.1953) is Professor in the Department of Pathology, with secondary appointments in Microbiology and Medicine. He received the B.S. degree in Chemistry from Austin College (Sherman, TX) in 1975 and the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington University (St. Louis, MO) in 1981. His doctoral work was done in the laboratory of J. A. Kapp on the mechanism of Ir gene control of the immune response to insulin. He completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He stayed in St. Louis as a Faculty member at Washington University and worked with P.E. Lacy on transplanation of the islets of Langerhans. After coming to UAB in 1987, he has focused on research projects and his clinical duties as Director of the UAB Hospital Immunocytology Lab, which performs flow cytometry and other studies on patient materials. Outside interests include family and photography.
