Lab Research Focus
My research program is very diverse and encompasses work in three different areas that includes basic and applied aspects of medical microbiology. First, I have three ongoing clinical studies aimed at evaluation of antimicrobial agents and methods for prevention of antimicrobial resistance in persons with neurogenic bladder secondary to spinal cord injury, the effects of cranberry extract on prevention of bacterial adherence in the urinary tract and development of urinary tract infections, and finally, the immunogenity of pneumococcal vaccine in persons with spinal cord injury. Second, I am involved with studies evaluating the molecular epidemiology and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecium. This work is being performed in collaboration with Dr. David Briles and Dr. Susan Hollingshead in the Department of Microbiology. Third, I have been evaluating the activities of new antimicrobial agents against mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas.
