Lab Research Focus
The primary research interests of the laboratory of Clinical Virology focus on latency and virulence of herpes viruses. For studies involving the molecular basis for latency, neuronal cultures are utilized to study gene expression with the establishment of latent virus. Reactivation of latent virus utilizing endogenous host factors is being explored. Genes involved in the virulence as well as the proteins which mediate these events are similarly under evaluation. The work involved with these studies employs specimens obtained in ongoing clinical investigations and, then, utilized in animal model and tissue culture experimentation. Thus, the major focus of the laboratory is on the molecular pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus infection.
